At the Heatherwood Hills Condominium sandlot in Calverton, Long Island NY, the farmers played football everyday in preparation for the 1973 Riverbend Junior High football season. We had all just met while registering for classes at Riverbend. Most of us hailed from different towns on Long Island. We were now potato-field pedestrians moving irrigation pipe, counting rows and tightening risers. Flannel shirts, overalls, and mud boots made up our wardrobe. CSN and Elton John songs could be heard blasting from lot cars on dirt farm roads driven by underage teens. Calling ourselves the Cougars, we challenged nearby towns to games of tackle football. With a few games under our belt that summer we then collided with the Flanders Greasers. Greasers lived near Flanders Bay where black-leather beauties strolled boardwalks bolstering their boyfriends virility and tough demeanor. They wore Kiss, Ramones, and Twisted Sister tee shirts. Junior High would-be greasers adorned black leather garb like their high school heroes. They were the kids we knew from school, and were our formidable opponents along with older, street-walking substitutes. Calverton and Flanders graduate to a new level of play when most become "Tidal Waves" on the Riverbend Junior High football team. The story follows Dan who's family just went through a series of moves where he attends several junior highs before Riverbend. Once there, Missy, a great friend and cheerleader, helps Dan adjust to his new surroundings. Before Missy, he meets incredible friends, while switching schools, he will later square-off against on the football field. With younger brother Glenn and older brother Pat, football stories and other plays act out in very human ways. Relationships play key roles in the evolution of allies and adversaries. The Riverbend Tidal Waves face warriors, hunters, and themselves in triumph and tragedy. Follow the boys through one of the great games in history. Enjoy!
